WHAT THE TOP-RANKING SELLSIDE INDIVIDUALS THINK

Taking a break from solemn market-related topics, The Asset Benchmark Research asked the top-ranking sellside individuals in local currency bonds whether Facebook is a helpful tool in building and/or keeping good relationships with investors and others in the industry. Of the 24 who expressed a view, 33% are in favour, 46% are not; 21% are ambivalent.

Patrick Wu, Hong Kong
Yes
Some investors and traders are my good friends. Facebook provides a good platform for us to share our life outside work. We may share our pictures or recipes and we play games together on Facebook
N. Viswanathan, India
No
I feel Facebook is best used as a tool for personal networking. In the professional space, I remain an ardent advocate of personalized relationships.
Mohit Jalali, India
No
Facebook is not really useful to build relationships. You develop and foster relationships through one-on-one meetings, which help in understanding client needs and helps us structure products that meet their requirements.
Rishi Godha, India
No
No I do not think so. We are more used to Reuters messaging service.
Rohit Gulati, India
No
From a business perspective, Reuters Messenger is a more popular tool and the group chats enable us to exchange market information and discuss market views.
GH Sundaram, India
No
We prefer Reuters and Bloomberg Messenger. Facebook is of course popular, with acceptance across age groups.
Arina Winarto, Indonesia
Yes
Definitely, Facebook helps us to give a personal approach. Given that, the fixed income industry is a dynamic and fast-paced environment therefore we need to benefit from the latest technology that is widely utilized globally in the industry. Thus Facebook has become one of my primary communication and relationship tools.
Loretta Gunardi, Indonesia
Yes
I would say yes. I think Facebook can enhance our relationship with investors across the industry and regions.
Lisa Usman, Indonesia
Yes/No
Definitely it is a great medium to build my network and keep a good relationship with people in this industry. But this is something that must be done outside work hours.
Edmund Liong, Malaysia
No
Unfortunately, I am not that into Facebook due to the existence of Bloomberg Anywhere, during office hours. Certainly, I cannot deny that it is a powerful tool to search for long lost contacts and friends.
Steen Saw, Malaysia
No
Although Facebook is a more recreational apparatus for social networking than a business tool, I believe any platform that provides and encourages interaction with clients has merits. Personally, however, I prefer the more conventional channels in order to maintain healthy client relationships as nothing really beats the human touch.
Ray Choy, Malaysia
No
We do not believe in using Facebook for work-related purposes.
Carlyn Dulay, Philippines
No
Though Facebook is becoming popular among various age demographics and can sometimes be used for building relationships with investors and with others in the industry, I find that it is still much better to use more traditional and personal means of communicating with counterparties and friends.
Cindy Cocuaco, Philippines
Yes
Of course. A lot of people are so addicted to Facebook that it stops short of being a hobby. It helps as an ice breaker and a conversation starter. There are some people whom I have only met for the first time but felt that we've met a long time ago because we've been Facebook buddies for quite a while. I get to keep in touch with former colleagues. For clients based offshore, I get to put a face to the name and the voice. Somehow, I fast-track getting to know the person outside of work.
Renee Wee, Philippines
Yes
Facebook allows you to know you clients more - their “human” side. It’s a good tool to take a professional relationship to a more personal one. It allows us to have good conversations with our clients, outside of business.
Stephanie Heng, Singapore
No
While Facebook has been extremely pervasive in the lives of individuals around the world and is great for social networking, I feel that having the personal touch is key to maintaining relationships. Therefore, I still rely on the traditional method of meeting up with clients during lunches, conferences and other events to continue to engage them, maintain and develop a stronger business relationship with them.
Terence Gan, Singapore
No
No, I do not use Facebook. I draw a distinction between professional and private space and Facebook in my book is private.
Debbie Liu, Taiwan
Yes/No
Facebook is a global social networking site. It is fast and easy to exchange messages and allows for the use of multimedia, so it really can bridge the distance between friends. I am a Facebook fan as well and often interact with other Facebook members. It’s just that there still aren’t that many Facebook users in Taiwan and so it is not comprehensive enough to be used for work.
Sophia Hung, Taiwan
Yes/No
I have become a Facebook member. Although it is not so obvious what help it can offer to my work at present, I feel confident that in the future Facebook will help a good deal in networking with people in my field.
Tadtawan Athipilai, Thailand
Yes/No
Some say Facebook is the future. To me, it’s good enough but not that very necessary.
Danaya Wanitphakdeedecha, Thailand
Yes/No
Not quite but I have registered with them too : ).
Chanaichon Suwansirikul, Thailand
Yes
Definitely. The online social networking media is now very much integral to our personal and professional life. The speed, convenience and accessibility help better connect with friends, as well as clients. We can use the tool to learn about clients’ lives and interests through their various activities and opinions. And as its name suggests, it can be used as a tool to strengthen our relationship and expand our social boundary.
Ekkapob Makeguljai, Thailand
Yes
I spend a great deal of time staying connected to friends (including current and former clients) through Facebook. However, for market updates and the latest ideas, I make sure it's always face-to-face conversations with clients.
Sasiwimon Parthanadee, Thailand
Yes
Yes, it helps us to easily update/chat with our clients/colleagues and others in the industry and also helps us to know each other better, which can strengthen our relationship and friendship.
