The National Power Transmission (NPT) secured in May 2011 a US$200 million debt financing for its transmission projects in southern Vietnam supported by Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI) – the first official agency-backed financing deal ever arranged for NPT in the international capital markets.

It was the first NEXI untied loan for large-scale power transmission projects in Asia.

The transaction, through the insurance coverage by NEXI, provided NPT with more competitive funding than the traditional commercial loan facility. It demonstrated how agency-backed financing remains a key tool for obtaining funding for large projects in Asia,

The proceeds were used to finance the construction of four strategically important power transmission projects, which would help maintain the stability and reliability of the power distribution network in the southern part of Vietnam.
