The Asset 19 Nov 2014

Citi, Credit Suisse and Bank of America Merrill Lynch secure major honours in The Asset Triple A Country Awards in Southeast Asia, a region that is increasingly becoming important for banks in terms of revenue generation.

Citi garnered the best bank award in four of the six Southeast Asian countries, demonstrating the strength of its well-rounded franchise in the region. The Asset editors judged it the winner of best bank in Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, while it also won the best debt house award in Vietnam, the third time in a row, and bagged the same accolade in Indonesia for the second consecutive time.

Credit Suisse continued to outshine the competition in the investment banking space, winning the best foreign investment bank award in four out of the six countries. In addition to retaining the awards for foreign investment bank in Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam, it added the same recognition in the Philippines with its involvement in a number of significant deals across equity, debt and M&A, including a few solely-led transactions. The bank is also the winner of the best M&A house in Singapore and Malaysia, and the best equity house in Indonesia. Indeed, this was a strong year for Credit Suisse in Southeast Asia when it was firing on all cylinders across all products.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch was another big winner in Southeast Asia where the bank surprised its competition with its roles in a number of significant transactions across debt, equity and M&A. It is named the best foreign investment bank in Indonesia, for the first time in at least eight years, while it also won recognition as best M&A house, showcasing the growing strength of its franchise in this country. In Thailand, it also bagged The Triple's A honour for best investment bank, repeating its feat in 2013. The bank added the award for M&A house for the first time in at least two years for its involvement in a number of key deals.

HSBC too scored big, winning a total of six awards including the accolade of best debt house in four countries, and the honour of best bank in two countries, namely Vietnam, where it regained the award after conceding it in the last two years, and Malaysia, where it has been awarded best bank since 2003.

In the Philippines, UBS defended its titles last year of best equity house and best brokerage house for its involvement in some of the most important deals out of this market, including several sole-led deals, while it also managed to capture the award of best M&A house for the first time in several years.

Maybank Kim Eng Securities remains a force to reckon with in the brokerage space, with the securities company winning the recognition as best brokerage house in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

Among the local houses, DBS remains dominant in its home market Singapore, repeating last year's wins of best domestic bank, best domestic investment bank and best domestic bond house, adding to the list the award of best equity house for its sheer dominance in the market.

In Malaysia, the authority of CIMB Investment Bank was not challenged as it once again wins best domestic investment bank, best equity house and best domestic bond house awards after successfully printing several landmark transactions. The bank's brokerage arm, CIMB Securities, also scooped the accolade as best brokerage house in Indonesia for the first time ever.

In Thailand, Siam Commercial Bank wins the award for best domestic bank for the seventh year, and best domestic bond house for the third year in a row, while also adding the best equity house award into its list of winnings.

In Vietnam, Saigon Securities once again is named best domestic investment bank and best equity house, while Ho Chi Min City Securities wins the award of best brokerage house and best M&A house. VPBank Securities is the first-time winner of best domestic bond house in the country.
