Proactive, non-linear thinker, and consistent. These are some of the attributes the top-ranked sellside individuals have been recognized for.

Nearly 600 analysts, economists and strategists, salespeople and traders were nominated by investors as leaders in their field in this year’s Asian G3 Bond Benchmark Review. Of the nominees, 14% are analysts; 16% are economists and strategists; 51% are salespeople; and 19% are traders. We ranked 40 of the movers and shakers who are making waves in Asia’s bond markets.

For the eighth consecutive year, Edwin Chan, head of Asian credit research at UBS was voted this year’s top analyst. Commending Chan, one investor said his analysis is “pretty in-depth”. Glenn Ko, an analyst also with UBS, was lauded by another investor for being “very helpful and proactive”. Standard Chartered analyst Feng Zhi Wei was commended for her knowledge of the market. “She knows the credits very well,"  said one of the investors.

Among economists and strategists, Johanna Chua at Citi stood out. One investor said of Chua’s work: “the quality from her team is pretty high consistently”. One investor explained why Shankar Narayanaswamy, head of credit strategy and financials at Standard Chartered was exceptional. He and his team are “able to make comments on any piece of news and are on top of market developments”, said one of the investors.

In sales, Christina Park at Morgan Stanley was cited as a “non-linear thinker”. Harsh Singh from HSBC was also commended: “he has a good memory and knows what kind of names we are involved in right down to the bonds and the exact level that we care about”.

Among traders, Dean Wang also at Morgan Stanley got this comment from an investor: “he is still the top trader for me in terms of high yield bonds”. Another investor had this to say about Zhirong Chen at ANZ: “It’s all about the traders…he stands out”.
