Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) President Jin Liqun visited the Netherlands and Austria in mid-November.
While in The Hague, Jin met with Prime Minister Mark Rutte, Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem, Special Envoy for International Water Affairs Henk Ovink and the Chief Executive Officer of Dutch development bank (FMO) Jurgen Rigterink.
He also participated in a roundtable discussion with Dutch business leaders hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Jin was then in Vienna to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization. He also met with Dr. Gerd Müller, Austria’s Alternate Governor, Director General for Economic Policy and Financial Markets at the Federal Ministry of Finance.
Since its setting up was announced in October 2013, the AIIB has been working closely with European development banks, in spite of the initial attempts by the United States to persuade European governments not to co-operate with the new institution.
In addition to development banks from individual countries, the European Investment Bank has said that it is open to working on specific projects alongside the AIIB. The EIB does around 10% of its lending outside of the EU, and on these projects it normally works in partnership with other institutions. Total EIB lending in 2015 stood at 85 billion euros.
