iPhone manufacturer Apple is stepping up its involvement in renewable energy via a deal with Goldwind Science & Technology Co, the world’s largest turbine maker.
Goldwind's wholly owned subsidiary, Beijing Tianrun New Energy Investment Co, has agreed to transfer 30% equity stakes in four subsidiary companies to Apple, according to a filing to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
After the transfers the target project companies will become co-operative joint ventures. Goldwind is based in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.
The four subsidiaries are Nanyang Runtang New Energy located in Henan Province, Zibo Runchuan New Energy in Shandong Province, Shuozhou Pinglu Sineng Wind Power in Shanxi Province, and Qiaojia Tianqiao Wind Power in Yunnan Province. They will contribute 285MW of clean energy, to help Apple meet its commitment to reducing carbon emissions from its production partners in China.
Already last year Apple signed up with US company SunPower Corp to build two solar power projects totalling 40MW in the Aba Tibetan-Qiang autonomous prefecture in Sichuan province. And the two companies are also involved in two more solar projects totalling 170MW in Inner Mongolia.
It is also working with Foxconn Technology Group on new energy plants that are expected to generate 600MW of electricity, which will be used across all Chinese factories that manufacture iPhones.
But the deal with Goldwind marks its first move into wind power. Goldwind has expanded globally, and recently won a contract in Chile. It is also interested in projects in countries that fall within the scope of OBOR.

For Goldwind, the tie up with Apple is more than just a matter of co-operation on individual projects. It also said it is statement to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange that it anticipates that the co-operation will increase its brand awareness and influence as a wind power integrated solutions provider.
