Citi strengthens Asia-Pacific franchise
Tim Monger heads North and East Asia cluster while Amol Gupte leads South Asia and Asean cluster
The Asset 23 Jun 2022

Citi has appointed Tim Monger as head of its North & East Asia (NEA) cluster and Amol Gupte as head of the South Asia & Asean (SAA) cluster, effective immediately.

Announcing the new appointments in a staff memo, Asia-Pacific chief executive officer Peter Babej comments: “Continuous focus on cross-market trends as well as dynamic alignment of our resources are key to delivering the full power of Citi’s global network.  Over 120 years in Asia-Pacific, we have followed this approach to build an exceptional client franchise, and we are following the same approach to deliver excellence in this time of rapid change.”

Monger, based in Hong Kong, has served as chief financial officer for Asia-Pacific since 2019, helping set the bank’s strategic agenda and guiding its investment priorities. Last year, he has taken on a leadership role in executing Citi’s strategy refresh through consumer banking divestitures across Asia, Europe and the Middle East. He joined Citi in 2017 as head of productivity from the Boston Consulting Group where he was a partner and head of UK financial services.

Gupte has held a number of senior roles in banking and country management in his more than 30 years with Citi.  He has served as Citi country officer (CCO) of Singapore and Asean head since 2016.  Prior to that, he held a number of senior treasury and trade solutions roles globally, including as head of the Asia-Pacific business.  He started his career with Citi in the consumer bank in India.

The CCOs of Australia, China, Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan will report to Monger, and the CCOs of India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam will report to Gupte.

With Gupte’s appointment as head of the SAA cluster, the bank will soon announce his replacement as Singapore CCO. Monger will continue in his role as CFO for the region until his successor is announced.
