Corporate trustees adapt to new market dynamics
Announcing the winners of the Best in Corporate Trust Awards of The Asset Triple A Sustainable Investing Awards for Institutional Investor, ETF, and Asset Servicing Providers 2022
The Asset 11 Aug 2022

The dynamics of debt capital markets is evolving and pushing corporate trustees into servicing a growing variety of mandates.

It used to be that corporate trusteeship was a plain vanilla service, but in recent years the advent of sustainability bonds, increasingly complex securitization deals, Islamic bonds going mainstream, and digital technology financing, among other developments, is making corporate trust servicing a more dynamic exercise for the service providers. This is in addition to the continuing growth of traditional fixed-income instruments.

On the other hand, the massive crisis in China’s high-yield bond market is also making it more challenging for corporate trustees who have to represent the interests of their investor-clients in the face of all the bankruptcies that are emerging.

It is in this context that we are announcing the winners of the Best in Corporate Trust Awards of The Asset Triple A Sustainable Investing Awards for Institutional Investor, ETF, and Asset Servicing Providers 2022.

Best in Corporate Trust, Asia

Citi – Winner

Citi remains the leading corporate trustee in Asia, ranking number one in debt capital market, high-yield and medium-term note deals in the region. Citi is also a well-rounded corporate trustee in terms of types of deals, market coverage, and market insights. The bank has also been recognized by The Asset as the Best Bond Adviser, reaffirming its overall leadership in the debt capital markets.

Deutsche Bank – Highly Commended

Client feedback through client calls and an in-house survey conducted by The Asset during the awards period reaffirms Deutsche Bank’s strength in client servicing in corporate trust, particularly for highly specialized mandates. This is especially relevant in the current challenging market environment where some clients require customized services.

Best in Corporate Trust, Hong Kong

CCB Asia – Winner

CCB Asia has emerged as the leading player in the Hong Kong-China corporate trust market, enjoying explosive growth in bond trustee/agency business in 2021. This growth is testament to the successful market recognition of CCB Asia’s wealth of expertise, broad agency capabilities and a robust team to execute complex solutions with capital market practitioners and corporates.

Best in Corporate Trust, India

HSBC – Winner

HSBC has emerged as the leading player in the corporate trust space in India during the awards period, winning mandates in clean energy, sustainability, mergers and acquisitions, and digital technology. The mandates reaffirm HSBC’s skill and ability to navigate India’s complex regulatory framework.

Best in Corporate Trust, Malaysia

Deutsche Bank Winner

Deutsche Bank’s strength and experience in the Malaysian market was reaffirmed by client feedback through an in-house survey conducted by The Asset. Deutsche Bank has a track record for servicing long-tenure clients which have continued to use its services over the years because of their excellent experience with the bank.

Best in Corporate Trust, South Korea

Citi – Winner

Citi leads other corporate trust banks in South Korea during the awards period, ranking first in the asset-backed securitization and covered bond markets. It also took away a corporate trust portfolio from a competitor, thus increasing its market share and coverage in South Korea’s debt capital market.
