Thailand's TTCL to develop Myanmar LNG power facility
US$685 million project will be constructed in Yangon region
Michael Marray 27 Jan 2021

TTCL Public Co has signed a power purchase agreement with Electric Power Generation Enterprise (EPGE), a state-owned enterprise under the Myanmar Ministry of Electricity and Energy (MOEE), for a liquefied natural gas-to-power project in the Yangon region.

The agreement was signed on January 20 by TTCL Power Myanmar Co (TPMC), a subsidiary of Bangkok-based TTCL, which is a joint venture between Toyo Engineering Corporation of Japan and Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited. TPMC will develop the 388MW Ahlone LNG-to-power project in Ahlone township, Yangon region.

Total investment is estimated at US$685 million. The Ahlone LNG Power Project is being developed under a build-operate-transfer (BOT) structure, with a 25-year term.

The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) works comprise the power plant, plus a 28-kilometre transmission line, a 25-kilometre gas pipeline, and an LNG receiving terminal. The scope of the project also includes procurement, transport, storage and regasification of imported LNG.

The electricity generated will be supplied to Myanmar’s national grid. The project is expected to come online in 2024.

TTCL received a notice to proceed, granting development rights for the project, from the MOEE in January 2018.
