StanChart strengthens securities services leadership team
Appoints Chris van Staden as the regional head of securities services for Africa & Middle East
The Asset 7 May 2018

STANDARD Chartered has appointed Chris van Staden as the regional head of securities services, Africa & Middle East (AME). Staden is responsible for driving the securities services business agenda across the seventeen countries in AME, and oversees the business’s sales, product, implementation & client management, and technology & operations functions.

Based in South Africa, Staden will be supported by a reorganised regional leadership team which includes, Michelle Swanepoel, as the regional head of business account manager, Prochi Sookun, as the regional head of sales and Pierre Mengal, as the regional head of product, Middle East, Jatin Rangras as head of securities services, UAE and interim regional head of operations and Catherine Tinavapi, who joined the bank as head of market information, AME. In addition to the above names, Maria Jenner will also be joining Chris’ team as the regional head of operations, Africa & Middle East, starting July 1 2018.

Staden has more than 19 years of experience in the banking industry and has held several senior management roles within the investor services and global markets segments. His appointment is in line with the bank’s growth plan for its securities services business, a key aspect of which is to boost bench strength by selectively recruiting experienced industry leaders.

Staden is a member of the securities services management Team and will report to both Margaret Harwood-Jones, global head of securities services, and Philip Panaino, regional head of transaction banking, AME.

Commenting on the appointments, Margaret Harwood-Jones says, “Africa remains a key priority in our growth strategy and having an experienced leadership team across the region is a pre-requisite to meeting client expectations. I am excited by the opportunity in front of us.”

Standard Chartered’s securities services business was re-organised in July 2016, bringing together the bank’s sales, product, service and technology & operations all under a newly-created global business line within transaction banking. The securities services business continues to be an established leader across Asia, Africa and the Middle East with presences in 40 markets, serving the largest global custodians, broker-dealers and both international and local institutional investors globally.
