2nd Asia Infrastructure Finance Leaders Dialogue

Asia will need to invest US$22.6 trillion in infrastructure from 2016 to 2030 to maintain its growth momentum, according to the Asian Development Bank. That figure is expected to increase as climate change initiatives and new growth projections are factored in. Currently, the region has a huge infrastructure investment gap. The public sector can hardly provide the funding requirements, so the private sector will have to step up to the plate to fill the gap.

A key challenge is to make infrastructure investment more attractive to the private sector. Regulatory and institutional reforms are needed to generate a pipeline of bankable projects for public-private partnerships (PPP). Deepening of capital markets will also be helpful to attract long-term institutional investors and channel the region’s substantial savings into infrastructure investment. Tapping alternative sources of liquidity is crucial.
