The Carlyle Group in major Southeast Asia push with key hires
The Carlyle Group makes new hires to its Asian private equity platform
The Asset 24 May 2018

Global alternative asset manager The Carlyle Group on May 23 announced the hiring of Robby Winarta as managing director and Long Hoang as director to its Asian private equity platform. Winarta, who will be based in Jakarta and begin on July 2, will lead the firm's investment activities in Indonesia. Hoang, who will join on June 1 and based in Singapore, will focus on investment activities in Vietnam.

Their appointments come as Carlyle seeks to further expand its presence in the region, where it believes there will be increasing numbers of attractive investment opportunities going forward.

Prior to joining Carlyle, Winarta worked at Credit Suisse for 20 years, most recently as head of Indonesia investment banking coverage, a position that he held for five years. He has been based in Jakarta for 16 years, and before that worked with Credit Suisse in New York and Singapore.

Hoang was most recently a vice-president at TPG Capital Asia Growth covering Singapore and Vietnam. Before that, he was a director at Navis Capital Partners, and worked at Standard Chartered Private Equity (Singapore), Dragon Capital Group (Vietnam) and Vinacapital Group (Vietnam).

With the additions of Winarta and Hoang, Carlyle's Southeast Asian team will now consist of eight investment professionals, focusing principally on small and large market opportunities in Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines, and opportunistically pursuing investments in other markets.

Carlyle established its presence in Asia in 1998 and now has nine offices in the region. From 1998 through to March 31 2018, Carlyle's Asian private equity platform has invested more than US$15 billion of equity, and currently has US$16.3 billion of assets under management.
