Citi has appointed Christine Lam as country head and country officer for China. She will oversee all the businesses and franchise operations in China, and will be responsible for maintaining the regulatory and governance standards.

Lam is a career Citibanker having joined as a management associate in the financial institutions group in 1983. She has a wide-ranging experience across both the institutional and consumer businesses, with an extensive background in O&T over a 33-year career.

In her most recent role as Asia Pacific O&T Head, she forged a stronger partnership between O&T and the businesses at the bank.  Previously she had served as the country business manager for Hong Kong and Macau. She was also the chief operating officer for Asia Global Banking from 2004 to 2009. Her early career was spent working in various business and operations roles in Canada and Hong Kong, and she spent a significant number of years in trade services and the worldwide securities business (now securities services).

Lam is taking over from Andrew Au who will retire after building a solid China franchise for Citi. During his tenure, Citi’s China revenue passed the US$1 billion mark. The bank now operates in 13 cities in China. The establishment of the local securities joint venture, Citi Orient Securities, and the launch of Citi’s sole-branded credit card were some of the highlights of his leadership.

Lam will continue to report to Francisco Aristeguieta and sit on the bank’s Asia-Pacific operating committee.
