Badlisyah Abdul Ghani: Promoting the development of Islamic capital markets outside Malaysia

CIMB Islamic Bank has played and continues to play a significant role in realizing the Government of Malaysia’s aspirations to becoming a global leader in Islamic finance and making Kuala Lumpur a global hub for Islamic finance.

The bank has been involved in several landmark and innovative transactions that contributed to the development of the Islamic capital markets.

Leading this charge at CIMB Islamic has been its CEO Badlisyah Abdul Ghani, who has become a face to the world for Malaysia’s Islamic banking/finance industry.

Today, one of his immediate tasks is to champion the development of the Islamic capital markets outside Malaysia as CIMB Islamic has been actively involved in providing advisory services to various governments and government entities, which are committed to establishing Islamic finance frameworks – such as in Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong and the UK.

Along the way, Badlisyah continues to orchestrate CIMB Islamic’s expansion in the Asean countries with the Indonesian platform, through CIMB Niaga Syariah now fully in place in terms of relevant branches.

In Singapore, it has expanded its business to include Islamic commercial banking to target the small and medium enterprises in which it allocated S$100 million in the first year. In Thailand, its focus is very much on wholesale banking and that should see some pick-up in 2012.
