When CSOP Asset Management started its ETF business in Hong Kong 10 years ago, the number of products available in the territory was quite limited and the offerings were largely uninteresting. Also, in terms of liquidity, only a few were trading well. Fast forward to today, and we see an ETF market that is throbbing with vitality, offering a wide range of products and a deep pool of liquidity that is attracting issuers and investors from all over Asia and elsewhere. A lot of work needed to be done.
This is how Melody Xian He, deputy chief executive officer of CSOP Asset Management, characterizes the progress of the ETF market to which she and her company have a part of. It is for her efforts that He is honoured for the ETF Leadership Award as part of The Asset Triple A Best ETF Provider Awards 2022.
“We’re very proud that we are one of those who have been pushing and facilitating a lot of these changes,” He says. “For example, a lot of the products that have gained momentum, including thematic products and Hong Kong sector products like the Hang Seng Tech ETF, are very popular.”
He, who was appointed deputy CEO in January this year, rose through the ranks at CSOP Asset Management, starting as an associate for the institutional client group responsible for sales, product development and marketing in May 2012. She held this post before serving as vice-president and head of capital markets beginning in February 2013.
Her ETF career started to take off when she was promoted to executive director, head of ETF and index solutions, in August 2015. Soon she became one of the leaders actively promoting ETF investing. She was a panellist at The Asset’s 2nd Asia ETF Summit held in Singapore on November 16 2016, which discussed the topic “Choosing the best ETF for your portfolio”. She was promoted again to managing director, head of sales and product strategy, in December 2017, a post she had held until her appointment as deputy CEO.
Owing to the work of He and her team, CSOP Asset Management has emerged as one of the leading ETF providers in Hong Kong. In the past three years, five out of the top 10 most actively traded ETFs/ ETPs in Hong Kong are managed by the firm.
CSOP Asset Management won The Asset Triple A Best ETF Provider Award for Hong Kong in 2022, 2021 and 2019. In the year 2020, the firm won three out of four ETF awards issued by the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
He is acknowledged as one of the women leaders in Hong Kong’s ETF industry for the work she has done in promoting ETFs and developing the ETF market.
